Vauxhall Insignia DPF Warning Light
Vauxhall Insignia diesel particle filter system (DPF) filters out harmful soot particles from the exhaust gases. The soot builds up inside the filter and requires cleaning. This is done periodically and the soot is burnt at high temperatures. This process is often done automatically without the requirement for driver intervention or notification.
The automatic cleaning process known as DPF regeneration takes place during set conditions and typically requires between 7 to 12 minutes, but may require up to 25 minutes.
During this process, Autostop is not available and fuel consumption may be higher than normal. There is also an unusual burning smell during the regeneration process which is normal.
Driver Intervention
On occasions, DPF regeneration is unable to be performed automatically. This is often due to the Vauxhall Insignia being primarily used for short trips where not enough time is available and/or the driving conditions are not suitable.
In this instance, the Vauxhall Insignia DPF warning light will illuminate along with a warning message in the Driver Information Centre indicating that the diesel particle filter is full and that driver intervention is required. If the DPF warning light illuminates, start the cleaning
process as soon as possible.
Important: If the Vauxhall Insignia DPF warning light flashes along with a warning message, this indicates the diesel particular filter has reached the maximum filling level. The DPF cleaning process must take place immediately to avoid possible damage to the engine.
Cleaning the DPF Diesel Filter
DPF filter cleaning is most suitable to take place on high speed roads that do not require stopping such as dual carriageways and motorways. To begin the DPF regeneration process follow this procedure:
- Continue driving and keep the engine speed above 2000 rpm (this can be seen on the rev counter).
- If the rev counter reads below 2000 rpm, shift down a gear to increase the engine speed.
- The DPF cleaning process will then automatically begin and the cleaning process works quickest at high engine speeds.
- Once the cleaning process is complete (usually from between 7-12 minutes, but potentially up to 25 minutes), the DPF warning light will go out.
- Try to avoid interrupting the cleaning process by stopping or slowing down where the engine speed falls under 2000 rpm.
DPF Cleaning Process Fault
If for any reason the DPF is unable to be cleaned, the check engine warning light will illuminate along with a message in the Driver Information Centre. In this instance, engine power may be reduced. Contact a Vauxhall workshop immediately.
If the DPF warning light is flashing and continues to flash after you have attempted to clean the DPF filter, contact a Vauxhall workshop immediately to avoid potential engine damage.
