Toyota Yaris Dashboard Warning Lights
Japanese car maker Toyota has been manufacturing the Yaris since 1999. The Toyota Yaris dashboard warning lights detailed below cover the latest two generations and show a symbol, what the warning symbol means and in some cases, what to do based on the manufacturers recommendations.
If a warning light illuminates on your Toyota Yaris dashboard, always investigate to find out how important it is. This is particularly important if the light is red. Red warning lights represent the most urgent and if ignored may result in vehicle damage or risk to vehicle occupants.

Symbol name: Toyota Yaris triangle warning light. Description: The warning triangle containing an exclamation mark comes on or flashes when the master warning system has detected a malfunction. If the brake warning light is illuminated, ensure the parking brake if properly released. • If the parking brake is properly released, you may have low brake fluid levels. Stop as soon as safely possible and check brake fluid levels. Top up if required. • If the parking brake is fully released and the brake fluid level is acceptable, there may be a fault with the vehicle braking system. It's advised at this stage to discontinue driving until you have received advice from an authorised VW workshop. Yellow brake warning light On certain models of Toyota Yaris, the brake warning light may illuminate in yellow. This signifies a less critical fault, though any brake related faults should be investigated immediately. |

If the ABS warning light comes on, this feature will be disabled but traditional brakes remain operational. There will be an increased risk of locking wheels while braking. Have system checked as soon as possible. ABS and brake warning light The illumination of both the ABS warning light and the brake warning light simultaneously means that the electronic brake force distribution control unit has reported a malfunction with the electronic brake force distribution (EBD or EBFD). This is another brake support system which automatically varied the amount of braking force on individual wheels, resulting in better performing brakes / stopping ability. Normal brakes will operate, but have system checked as soon as possible. |

If the battery light stays on or comes on while driving, it means the battery is no longer being charged and it indicates a malfunction of the alternator or of the charging system. Electricity is required to keep your car running, in this instance the car will be running off the battery alone. The battery will run flat, so switch off any electrical systems that are not essential and immediately make your way to a repair workshop. See why is my car battery warning light on. |

Switch off the engine and wait for 5 minutes for the engine oil to drain into the oil pan. 3. Using the dipstick, check the engine oil level. 4. If oil levels are low or below the minimum mark on the dipstick, add oil ensuring not to overfill. 5. Now start the engine and check that the oil pressure light has gone out. 6. Immediate attention is required to prevent damage. Stop the vehicle in a safe place and immediately stop the engine. 1. If there is steam coming from the engine compartment, wait for it to subside before opening the bonnet / hood. 2. Wait for 15 to 20 minutes for the engine to cool and check coolant levels. Top up if required. 3. Restart the engine and check that the warning light has gone out. These issues usually aren't critical but in some cases will require diagnostics tests in order to establish fault codes. Flashing check engine warning light If your Toyota Yaris check engine warning light is flashing, it may indicate that the engine is misfiring. Listen out for a rough, uneven sounding engine. Cleaning the DPF If the DPF warning light comes on, do the following: • Continue driving at a speed of 40 mph or more • Keep the vehicle in a lower gear to keep the engine speed high • Try to use a road that does not require stopping or slowing down • After about 10, the cleaning process should be complete. My 2013 yaris hybrid has a P (in a square) flashing ~ what is that please?
Hi Judi,
Is it the transmission indicator? Are you sure you’re pressing the brake or pressing the brake hard enough to come out of Park?
when looking at instrument panel there is a blue colored temperature and left side ofred temperature gauge if blue light is on what does that indicate
Hi Andrew,
The blue engine coolant warning light means that the coolant temperature is not yet up to optimal operating temperature. In other words, the engine is cold, so don’t work it hard until the light goes out.
DANGER light in red comes on my Yaris Cross 2022 model. Has anyone experienced this and what could be the reason.
Red light on the driver side is flashing up on the dashboard. What is this 2010 Yaris
Hi Barry,
Can you describe the warning light in a little more detail?
Please can you help. I picked up my brand new Yaris yesterday and every time I turn off the engine a message comes up saying check/attention back seat. There is nothing on the back seat. Is this normal?
Hi Tracy,
It’s nothing to worry about. It’s a safety feature that Toyota has implemented that gives you an alert, a reminder to check the rear seats when one of the rear doors of your Toyota is opened within 10 minutes of the vehicle’s engine starting. Essentially, it’s to avoid you unintentionally leaving a child in the car. The Rear Seat Reminder can be turned off in the multi-function display if you wish.
Have Yaris diesel 1.4 2011. After many years trouble free use yellow spanner came on last week. Cleared using owner manual procedure involving Trip A and disappeared . Reappeared again, removed, reappeared etc. Oil chaanged 3 months ago.
Then 3 days ago DPF light came on. Yesterday drove 80 minutes at over 40mph/2000 rpm to regenerate as per manual. Light extinguished, but every time I use the car after 3 minutes the DPF light comes on, going off after about 8 minutes.
What can I do?
Hi David,
I would think the issues you’re experiencing are due to the DPF. A blocked DPF can cause all sorts of engine issues, one of them to cause the engine oil to get too hot. This in turn can cause the oil to expand, triggering the service maintenance light. Sounds like the DPF isn’t regenerating properly and may need a forced regeneration. It’s something that you should have looked at because the problem does have the potential to cause expensive damage.
My wife swears that her 2020 Yaris Hybrid had a low beam light on the dash which has not been seen since a sevice and some warranty work (requiring gearbox removal). The blue high beam dash light works and a “ghost” of a low beam sign can be seen above it by shining a bright light on it. The local Toyota dealership says all is as it should be, but she is unconvinced. Who is right?
Hi Roger,
In the manual for your 2020 Yaris Hybrid, there is a reference to the low beam symbol on the steering column stalk:
The headlights, front parking, tail lights, license plate and instrument panel lights are on in this setting. But there’s no reference to the green low beam symbol as a warning light. The dealership are probably right. I know that sometimes in cars they have what appears to be a function, but it’s not included. Have you tried turning off automatic headlights and trying them manually to see if the symbol appears?
Many thanks. Yes I have tried all that and think your explanation is probably the correct one. (convincing my wife is another matter entirely!) Regards, Roger
Thank you for posting this valuable info. It has helped me know more about the car. Appreciate it.
