Suzuki SX4 S-Cross Dashboard Warning Lights
The SX4 S-Cross is a SUV, manufactured since 2006 by Japanese car maker Suzuki. The following warning lights may help you to troubleshoot the various symbols that may illuminate on your vehicle’s dashboard.
Warning lights illuminate for various reasons, from informational purposes, vehicle maintenance requirements, through to urgent warnings of faults. The following Suzuki SX4 S-Cross dashboard warning lights offer an illustration of the symbol, along with the symbol meaning and what action to take. Dashboard layout and designs will vary depending on your vehicle model.
Door Open
The door open warning light will remain lit along with an audible alert until all doors, including the tailgate are properly shut.
Oil Pressure
The red low oil pressure warning light is one of the more urgent symbols. It comes on when the pressure of the oil inside the engine is low. When oil pressure is low, it means that the oil may not sufficiently lubricate the parts inside the engine. This can result in heat build-up and engine seizure. If the low engine oil pressure warning light comes on while driving, immediately pull off the road when safe to do so and switch off the engine.
Check your engine oil level as low levels can trigger low pressure. If oil levels are at the required level or the warning light remains lit after adding oil, do not continue driving and arrange for vehicle recovery.
Battery Charging Light
Under normal operating conditions, the Suzuki SX4 S-Cross battery warning light comes on when the ignition or engine button is switched to the on position. The light should go out when the engine has started. If it remains lit after the engine has started, or comes on while driving, it means there’s a charging fault. If driving and the battery light illuminates, you may be limited to the length of journey before the engine cuts off. Make your way immediately to a safe location, or your nearest auto workshop. Common reasons for the Suzuki SX4 S-Cross battery light coming on include:
- Failing alternator
- Loose / broken drive belts
- Battery connection / wiring fault
- Ageing / failing battery
See why is my car battery warning light on for further information.
Engine Coolant
The Suzuki SX4 S-Cross engine coolant symbol refers to the temperature gauge. When the ignition or engine button is in the ‘on’ mode, the temperature gauge indicates the engine coolant temperature. Under normal driving conditions, the temperature gauge should remain around halfway between the cold (C) and hot (H) markers. If the gauge approaches the hot area, it indicates the engine coolant is overheating. In this instance:
- Switch off the air conditioning system.
- Pull off the road and allow the engine to idle until the temperature reduces.
- If the temperature does not reduce, switch off the engine and check water pump belt is and pulleys are not damaged or slipping.
- Check engine coolant level.
- If low, check for coolant leaks under the vehicle.
- If not leaks are found, top up coolant level.
- If there are coolant leaks, arrange for recovery.
For further information, see red engine coolant warning light on or flashing.
Auto Stop Start OFF
This symbol illuminates when the Suzuki SX4 S-Cross engine auto stop start system has been manually deactivated by pressing the ENG A-STOP OFF button on the dashboard. engine auto stop start will be reactivated the next time you restart the engine. If the Auto Stop OFF warning light flashes, it means there might be something wrong with the auto stop start system and requires a Suzuki workshop.
Engine Auto Stop Start
The Suzuki SX4 S-Cross engine auto stop start system will automatically switch the engine off when the vehicle comes to a stop without the need to operate the ignition switch or engine button. This helps to reduce exhaust emissions and fuel consumption. The green symbol illuminates when auto stop automatically shuts off the engine into standby mode.
ESP OFF
The ESP (Electronic Stability Program) OFF warning light illuminates when the system has been manually switched off. You will usually benefit by keeping ESP activate at all times. If your vehicle is stuck in mud or snow and you need to rock the vehicle to aid in releasing it, temporarily switch ESP off.
ESP
ESP (Electronic Stability Program), also known as ESC (Electronic Stability Control) is the Suzuki SX4 S-Cross stability system that helps to minimize understeer, oversteer and part of the program; traction control helps to improve tire traction. The ESP light blinks when the system is active. If the light remains steady lit, it means there’s a fault.
A fault with the ESP system is most commonly down to one of the wheel speed sensors malfunctioning. Additionally, if you are experiencing engine problems (the engine warning light is on), ESP may be disabled, due to the system potentially interfering with engine performance. For more information, see What ESC is in Cars and How Does ESC Work in Cars.
Airbag
The Suzuki SX4 S-Cross airbag warning light should come on or blink briefly when the ignition or engine start button is set to on. If it stays on for more than 10 seconds or comes on while driving, it means there’s a problem with the airbag or seat belt pretensioner system. Some of the common reasons why the airbag light is on can include:
- Problem with the crash detector sensors. This may be due to a slight impact or water corrosion.
- Clock spring inside the steering wheel column is worn.
- Dislodged wiring under the front seats.
- Airbag module has malfunctioned.
A diagnostic scanner that’s capable of reading airbag fault codes is usually require din this situation.
Passenger Seat Belt
This warning light illuminates when the front passenger does not buckle their seat belt.
Seat Belt
This warning light illuminates and blinks when the driver does not buckle their seat belt.
Engine Malfunction
The Suzuki SX4 S-Cross engine malfunction warning light comes on due to the vehicle’s on-board diagnostics system detecting a fault with the emissions control system. Under normal operating conditions, the Suzuki SX4 S-Cross engine malfunction warning light should come on briefly when the ignition or engine start button is switched to the on position. If the light comes on while driving, a fault has been detected.
There are a considerable amount of faults that can cause the engine light to illuminate. To find out what the fault is, diagnostic equipment is required. when the engine light comes on, a fault codes is usually generated and stored. The diagnostic equipment scans for fault codes and help to locate the problem. It’s often safe to drive with the engine light on, though ignoring the problem for an extended time may worsen the fault. If the engine light blinks, it may be due to engine misfire. Reduce speed and keep engine revs low. If the engine light continues to blink, seek immediate assistance to avoid possible engine damage. For further information on what to do if the engine warning light comes on, see reasons why the engine warning light is on.
Turn Signals / Hazards
These green arrow symbols illuminate to show that your turn signals or hazard warning lights are blinking. If either the left or right turn signal flashes quickly on the dashboard, it’s a sign that one of the bulbs has blown.
Glow Plugs
For diesel versions of the Suzuki SX4 S-Cross, the glow plugs warning light comes on when the ignition switch or engine start button is at the on position and goes out when glow plugs have heated sufficiently for engine start. If the glow plugs warning light flashes, it may be an indication with a reduction of heating, or timing issues with how long the glow plugs should operate.
Diesel Particulate Filter
The diesel particulate filter (DPF) is responsible for filtering harmful exhaust particles so that they do not enter the environment. Periodically the filter gets full and requires cleaning (regeneration). Regeneration often occurs without driver knowledge, but occasionally, particularly if the vehicle is used primarily for short trips, the filter may require assistance.
If the Suzuki SX4 S-Cross DPF warning light is on, continue driving at a speed of 31 mph or more and keep the engine speed at 2000 rpm or higher until the warning light goes off. If the light remains on, after several attempts, consult a Suzuki workshop. In this instance, a forced regeneration may be required. Continued driving with the DPF light on will result in damage.
Fuel Filter
For diesel versions of the Suzuki SX4 S-Cross, a fuel filter is required to separate water from the diesel fuel to prevent water entering the engine. Over time, the water from the fuel filter may require draining. When the fuel filter warning light comes on, drain water from the fuel filter as soon as possible.
Change Engine Oil
The OIL with a spanner / wrench under it is the Suzuki SX4 S-Cross oil change reminder warning light and comes on to alert you that the engine oil and filter need changing. When the engine oil and filter have been changed, in order to be reminded of the next oil and filter change, the oil change reminder light must be reset.
How to Reset the Oil Change Reminder Light
To reset the Suzuki SX4 S-Cross oil change reminder / service warning light:
- Switch the ignition on.
- Press and hold the indicator selector knob (35) until you see the settings mode options on the digital information display.
- Rotate the indicator selector knob to ‘Oil Change’.
- Press the indicator selector knob.
- Rotate to select ‘Reset OC’.
- Press and hold the indicator selector knob until you see ‘Successful’.
- The oil change reminder / service light has now been reset.
Check your engine oil level as low levels can trigger low pressure. If oil levels are at the required level or the warning light remains lit after adding oil, do not continue driving and arrange for vehicle recovery.
Automatic Headlight Levelling
This warning light illuminates when there’s a problem with the automatic headlight levelling system.
High Beam
This blue symbol represents the high beam (main beam) headlights.
Side / Position Lights
When this green symbol illuminates, the front position lights, tail lights, license plate and dashboard instrument lights are on. The headlights are not on.
Rear Fog Lights
This amber / yellow symbol will illuminate when the vehicle’s rear fog lights are switched on.
4WD Warning Light
If the Suzuki SX4 S-Cross 4WD drive light containing an exclamation point comes, it means a problem has been detected. In this instance, the 4X4 control module sets and stores a fault code. Advanced diagnostic scanners are usually required. These are typically used by Suzuki dealerships or Suzuki authorised workshops.
If the 4WD warning light blinks, it may be due to driving with wheels of a different diameter or that the drive train components are overheating. If the 4WD light is blinking, stop the vehicle, idle the engine and allow the components to cool.
Tire Pressure
The Suzuki SX4 S-Cross tire pressure warning light has two functions:
- To alert the driver that one or more tires have become significantly under-inflated (light stable lit).
- To warn that the TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) has a fault (flashes for 75 seconds, then remains stable lit).
Tire pressures should be adjusted in accordance with the cold tire pressure label inside the driver’s door jamb. After around 10 minutes of driving, the tire pressure light should go off. A blinking tire pressure light (TPMS malfunction) can be due to many reasons such as:
- A wheel has been fitted without a tire pressure sensor.
- A tire pressure sensor has been damage (often when changing a tire).
- A tire pressure sensor battery has expired.
- The vehicle is in a an area with a radio frequency interrupting the TPMS.
- A tire sealant has been used.
- Lots of snow or ice on the vehicle.
Transaxle Fault Light
The cog and exclamation point symbol refers to the Suzuki SX4 S-Cross automatic gearbox. The fault may relate to transmission fluid, a mechanical fault or a problem with a sensor. You can continue to drive, but have the fault examined as soon as possible due to the high expense of automatic transmissions. The first step is to have diagnostic equipment scan for fault codes.
Power Steering
The steering wheel and exclamation point refers to a problem with the Suzuki SX4 S-Cross power steering system. The Suzuki SX4 S-Cross makes use of electric power steering rather than the traditional hydraulic version. Sometimes the fault may be temporary, for example; the steering wheel is under heavy use when the vehicle is moving very slowly, or that the steering remains fully turned for a long period of time while the engine is running. This puts a heavy load on the steering motor and may cause it to overheat. When the motor has cooled, normal operation will resume.
Anti Lock Braking System
The anti-lock braking system (ABS) prevents the wheels from locking when the driver brakes harshly. This in turn allows the driver to continue to steer the vehicle, due to the wheels not locking. Located at each wheel is a wheel speed sensor. Being prone to water and debris damage, wheel speed sensors can often be the cause of an ABS failure. If the Suzuki SX4 S-Cross ABS warning light remains illuminated, the ABS system will not work, but the brakes will operate as normal.
Brake
The Suzuki SX4 S-Cross brake light comes on for three possible reasons:
- When the ignition or engine button is turned to the on position
- When the parking brake is engaged
- When brake fluid levels are low
It is normal for brake fluid levels to fall as brake pads wear. Periodically check the brake fluid reservoir and top up to the specified level. The brake light may also come on along with the ABS light when the rear brake force control function of the ABS system fails.
Master Warning Light
The triangle with an exclamation point is the Suzuki SX4 S-Cross master warning light. It comes on or blinks along with a symbol, message and/or audible buzzer for the following reasons:
- Blinks along with buzzer indicating a door or tailgate is not properly closed.
- Blinks along with buzzer along with message to service steering lock system.
- Blinks along with buzzer and message that the key is not detected.
- Blinks along with buzzer with message to service start system.
- Blinks along with buzzer with message to service BCM system.
- Blinks along with buzzer with message to service Hill Hold system.
- Blinks along with buzzer with message to service ESP (Electronic Stability Program).
- Blinks along with buzzer with message when the DPF require regeneration or if there’s a fault with the DPF.
- Blinks along with buzzer with message to drain water from the fuel filter.
- Blinks along with buzzer with message indicating that the transmission oil temperature is too high.
Speed Limiter
The ‘LIMIT’ symbol text illuminates on the dashboard when the speed limiter has been activated.
SET
The ‘SET’ symbol text illuminates on the dashboard when a cruising speed of the cruise control system , or a maximum speed of the speed limiter is set.
CRUISE
The ‘CRUISE’ symbol text illuminates on the dashboard when the cruise control system has been switched on.
Low Fuel
Low fuel levels in the tank. Add fuel as soon as possible. The arrow next to the fuel symbol to the next to the fuel gauge denotes which side of the vehicle that the fuel filler cap is located.
Immobilizer
The yellow key symbol represents the Suzuki SX4 S-Cross engine immobilizer system. The immobilizer light should stay on only briefly when the ignition is set to on. If the light remains lit, it means there’s a problem with the immobilizer system. Try an alternative key if you have one.
Trip Meter Selector Knob
This knob can be used to select between trip meter A or B. Trip meters are used to measure the distance between trips or between fuel stops. To reset the trip meter back to zero, push and hold the trip meter knob for around 2 seconds.
Indicator Selector Knob
The indicator selector know allows you to adjust the brightness of the dashboard display and also to select various functions on the digital display such as:
- Clock (A)
- Driving mode (B)
- Thermometer (C)
- Warning messages and lights, fuel consumption, driving range, average speed, oil life (D)
- Gearshift Indicator (E)
- Trip Meter (F)
- Odometer (G)
Thank you for this guide! I have a suzuki s cross 2022 with less than 9k on odometer and I couldn’t find anywhere in the owner manual what the ‘Change engine oil’ sign was (17) when it appeared on my dashboard. I got worried but now I know its just the sign for changing oil… Cheers! Great site!
Thanks Phil, you’re welcome.
