Nissan Kicks Dashboard Warning Lights

The dashboard warning lights detailed below are for the Nissan Kicks. All dash symbols explained along with what action to take based on manufacturers recommendations. The Nissan Kicks dashboard warning lights may vary based on your location.

ABS
This is the Nissan Kicks ABS warning light and it stands for Anti-lock Braking System. ABS is additional braking aid that prevent the wheels from locking during heavy braking. This means the driver can continue to steer as locked wheels prevent this. If the ABS warning light comes on, the ABS system is not functioning, but normal brake remain working as normal. A common reason for an ABS symbol to come on is due to a faulty wheel speed sensor.

AEB
Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) system can assist the driver when there is a risk of a forward collision with the vehicle ahead in the traveling lane. The Nissan Kicks AEB system uses a radar sensor located on the front lower grille of the vehicle. If the warning symbol remains lit, it may mean the system is unavailable or that there’s a fault. Ensure the radar sensor is clean and free from obstruction.

Brake
Depending on your model of Nissan Kicks, the brake warning light functions for both the parking brake and the foot brake systems. If the parking brake is not applied and this warning symbol comes on in red, it indicates low brake fluid level. In this instance:

2. If the brake fluid level is correct, it may indicate a fault with the brake system. If you judge it safe to do so, drive immediately to have the warning system checked by a qualified Nissan workshop.

Note: The brake warning light may illuminate along with the ABS light.

Battery
If the Nissan Kicks battery light comes on while the engine is running, it may indicate the charging system is not functioning properly. Turn the engine off and check the alternator / generator belt is not loose, broken or missing. You may be able to drive a short distance with a broken generator belt, but it’s not advised to do so.

 

Oil
This red symbol is the Nissan Kick low oil pressure warning light. Low oil pressure means that oil is not sufficiently going to lubricate the engine, potentially seizing it. If this light comes on or flickers while driving, immediately pull off the road and switch off the engine.

The low oil pressure warning light is not designed to come on due to low oil levels, but low oil level may trigger the light. check oil levels and add fluids if necessary. Engine Temperature
When the red engine temperature warning light comes on with the ignition switched to the on position, it means the high temperature sensor in the engine coolant system is operational. If the high temperature warning light illuminates while the engine is running, it may indicate the engine temperature is extremely high.

Stop the vehicle safely as soon as possible. If the vehicle is overheated, continuing vehicle operation may seriously damage the engine. Tire Pressure
The Nissan Kicks is equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) that alerts the driver when one or more tire has become under-inflated. The warning system does not apply to the spare. If there’s a fault with the TPMS, the warning light flashes for around 1 minute. This can occur if you’ve fitted a tire (such as the spare) that does not contain a pressure sensor. Or a tire has been fitted that is not Nissan specified for the vehicle may cause problems with the TPMS.

Tire Pressure Reset
After the tire is inflated to the recommended pressure, the vehicle must be driven at speeds above 16 mph (25 km/h) to activate the
TPMS and automatically reset the low tire pressure warning light.

Low Windshield Washer Fluid

Intelligent Key
The Nissan Kicks key warning light should come on for around 2 seconds with the ignition set to ‘on’, the go out. In this instance, it means the Intelligent Key system is working correctly. The following may occur when a problem is detected:

Flashes in Yellow
The Nissan Kicks key light flashes in yellow when the door is closed with the Intelligent Key left outside the vehicle and the ignition switch in the ON position. Make sure that the Intelligent Key is inside the vehicle.

Flashes in Green
The Nissan Kicks key light flashes in green when the Intelligent Key battery is running out of power. Replace the battery with a new one.

Illuminates in Yellow
The Nissan Kicks key light illuminates in yellow when it warns of a malfunction with the electrical steering lock system or the Intelligent Key system. It may not be possible to start the engine if the key warning light illuminates when the engine is off. If the key light comes on while driving, you can continue driving. In either instance, have the vehicle checked at a qualified Nissan workshop.

Power Steering
When the Nissan Kicks power steering warning light illuminates with the engine running, there will be no power assist for the steering, but you will still have control of the vehicle. At this time, greater steering effort is required to operate the steering wheel, especially in sharp turns and at low speeds.

If the engine is running excessively hot, power assist may be reduced. The power assisted steering motor may overheat when the engine is on and the driver is making continuous left to right lock steering, or keeping the steering at full lock. Power assist steering will return when the motor has sufficiently cooled.

Airbag
The Nissan Kicks airbag warning light should illuminate for about 7 seconds, then go off when the ignition is set to the ‘on’ position. There may be a fault with the front air bag, side air bag, curtain air bag, and pretensioner seat belt systems if the following occur:

 

• The air bag warning light remains on after approximately 7 seconds.
• The air bag warning light flashes intermittently.
• The air bag warning light does not come on at all.

This can be to do with cabling under the front seats becoming dislodged, airbag sensor fault, seat occupancy sensor fault and an object being lodged inside the buckles.

Engine Malfunction
The Nissan Kicks engine malfunction warning light, also called the ‘check engine’ light stays on steady or flashes indicating a possible emission control malfunction. This engine light can also come on steady if the fuel filler cap is not secured correctly., or fuel is running excessively low. Ensure that the vehicle has at least 3 gallons (11.4 liters) of fuel in the fuel tank.

Stays on Then Flashes
If the engine malfunction light comes on steady for 20 seconds and then flashes for 10 seconds when the engine is not running, it indicates that the vehicle is not ready for an emission control system inspection/maintenance test.

Engine Malfunction Light Stays On
If the Nissan Kicks engine warning light says on steady, a fault has been detected with the emissions control system. The engine warning light is generic, meaning there’s many potential faults associated. When the engine warning light comes on, a fault code is generated and stored in the vehicle’s ECU. Take your vehicle to a Nissan workshop and have it scanned for fault codes. You can continue to drive the vehicle.

Engine Malfunction Light Flashes
If the Nissan Kicks engine warning light flashes, it’s an indication of an engine misfire and may damage the emissions control system. To reduce or avoid emission control system damage:

• do not drive at speeds above 45 mph (72 km/h).
• avoid hard acceleration or deceleration.
• avoid steep uphill grades
• if possible, reduce the amount of cargo being hauled or towed.

The engine warning light may stop flashing and come on steady. Have the vehicle serviced as soon as possible.

O/D Off
The Nissan Kicks O/D OFF warning light comes on when the overdrive OFF mode is selected. To select the overdrive OFF mode, push the O/D OFF switch with the shift lever in the D (Drive) position. The function of overdrive is as follows:

Overdrive OFF Position
For normal driving and fuel economy, use the select the Nissan Kicks O/D OFF position.

Overdrive ON Position
Select the Nissan Kicks Nissan Kicks O/D ON position for driving up or down long slopes where engine braking is necessary, or for powerful acceleration. The transmission will automatically select a different gear ratio, allowing the engine to provide high output. Overdrive on will use more fuel.

Security
The Nissan Kicks car and key warning light flashes once every 3 seconds when the ignition is in the ‘off’ position to indicate that the security system is armed. If the NATS (Nissan Anti-Theft System) light stays on when the ignition is set to ‘on’, it means the system is malfunctioning. First thing to do is to try another key and to ensure that there is no interference from another key or device in the vehicle.

1. Remove any items that may be causing the interference away from the NATS key.
   
2. Leave the ignition switch in the ON position for approximately 5 seconds.
   
3. Place the ignition switch in the OFF or LOCK position and wait approximately 10 seconds.
   
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 again.
   
5. Start the engine

If you’re still unable to start the engine, have the vehicle taken to a Nissan workshop for diagnosis. Take along all registered keys.

SET
The Nissan Kicks SET warning light comes on while the vehicle speed is controlled by the cruise control system. The warning light flashes while the engine is running, indicating that there’s a problem that’s preventing the cruise control system from operating properly. The problem can vary, so diagnostics is required in order to read fault codes.

Slip Indicator
This warning light represents the Nissan Kicks slip indicator / traction control, VDC (Vehicle Dynamic Control) system. The VDC system uses various sensors to monitor driver inputs and vehicle motion. Brake pressure is controlled to reduce wheel slipping (wheel spin) and to help reduce understeer and oversteer. The light flashes when the system is operating and remains steady lit when there’s a fault. A fault is often due to a failing wheel speed sensor.

Master Warning
This triangle warning light containing an exclamation point is the Nissan Kicks master warning light. This light illuminates when various vehicle information display warnings appear. This is a generic warning light that is used when there’s no dedicated light. The master warning light may come on with other warning lights, but is generally used for non-urgent issues or for information messages such as:

• No key
• I-Key system warning
• Low washer fluid
• Door open
• Parking brake release
