Ford F-150 Tire Pressure Sensor Reset

Ford F150 Tire Pressure Reset Procedure

The Ford F150 uses the ‘direct’ method for measuring tire pressures by use of a battery powered sensor mounted inside each wheel. Using radio frequencies, the sensor transmits data to the vehicle control module which is analyzed and then presented to the driver’s dashboard either as general information or as an alert.

The Ford F150’s tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) automatically resets after adjusting tire pressures to the recommended values. The correct pressures based on standard fitted tires can be found on the tire pressure label located on the B-Pillar or the edge of the driver door. The tire pressure warning light goes off after driving the vehicle for around 2 minutes or so and at a speed of 20 mph (32 km/h) or more.

Where the TPMS does require resetting or ‘relearning’ is during tire rotation and where your Ford F150 has different size front and rear tires that also have different pressures.

The following tire pressure reset procedure applies to the Ford F150 12th generation (2009–2014) and 13th generation (2015–present).

To Reset the Ford F150 Tire Pressure System:

  1. Drive for at least two minutes and at a speed of 20 mph (32 km/h) or more, then safely park you vehicle where you have access to an air pump.
  2. Keep the key in the ignition and switch it to the off position.
  3. While keeping the engine switched off, cycle the ignition to the on position.
  4. Within the space of 10 seconds, switch the hazard warning lights on then off, three times.
  5. If the tire pressure reset mode has been activated successfully, the horn will sound once and the warning light Ford F-150 Tire Pressure Warning Light will flash and a message will be shown in the information display. If this doesn’t occur, try again from step 2.
  6. Reset, or ‘train’ the tire pressure monitoring sensors using the following reset sequence starting with the front left tire and in a clockwise order:
    • Front left (driver’s side front tire)
    • Front Right (passenger’s side front tire)
    • Rear right (passenger’s side rear tire)
    • Rear left (driver’s side rear tire)
  7. Tire pressure sensor identification code learning is confirmed by a single horn sound. If a double horn is sounded, the reset procedure is unsuccessful and will need to be repeated. The reset procedure will be complete after the horn sounds for the last rear left tire and will be confirmed by the warning light Ford F-150 Tire Pressure Warning Light no longer flashing. A confirmation message is also shown in the dashboard display:
    1. From the front left tire, decrease the air pressure until the horn sounds.
    2. From the front right tire, decrease the air pressure until the horn sounds.
    3. From the rear right tire, decrease the air pressure until the horn sounds.
    4. From the rear left tire, decrease the air pressure until the horn sounds.
  8. Turn off the ignition. At this point, if two short horns are heard, the reset procedure was unsuccessful and it must be repeated.
  9. Now inflate all four tires to the recommended pressure values from the tire pressure label located on the driver’s side B-Pillar.
