Citroën Berlingo Dashboard Warning Lights
The Citroën Berlingo has been manufactured since 1996 and is now on the third generation. Detailed below are the dashboard warning lights for the second generation (Mk 2, 2008 – 2018) and the current third generation (Mk 3, 2018 – present) Citroën Berlingo. This includes both the Berlingo family MPV and Berlingo van. Any differences between the Mk 2 and Mk 3 Berlingo warning lights will be mentioned below.
Symbol | Warning Description and Action |
---|---|
The Citroën Berlingo stop warning light illuminates with another fault light and message. This is a major fault warning and is associated with: • Braking system / brake fluid / brake force distribution • Engine oil pressure • Engine coolant • Power steering • Major electrical fault • Automatic gearbox (if applicable) If the stop warning light illuminates, safely pull off the road, switch off the engine and contact a Citroën workshop. Diagnostic equipment is required to locate the fault code. Citroën Berlingo Mk 3 Along with the above, the Mk 3 version of the Berlingo may illuminate with the engine diagnostic system light. This is a major engine fault and requires stopping the vehicle. |
|
The Citroën Berlingo engine oil pressure warning light indicates: Mk 2 Berlingo: Low engine oil pressure or high temperature. If the engine is running hot, stop the engine and allow to cool. When cool, check oil levels and top up if required. If temperature and oil levels are correct but the warning light remains on, do not continue driving. Major engine lubrication fault. Contact a Citroën workshop. Mk 3 Berlingo: Low engine oil pressure. When safe to do so, pull off the road and switch off the engine. Major engine lubrication fault. Contact a Citroën workshop. |
|
The Citroën Berlingo brake warning light apples to all Berlingo versions: • The hand brake is applied. Check the hand brake is fully released. • Brake fluid level is low. Brake fluid levels will fall over time as the brake pads wear. Top up brake fluid using Citroën recommended fluids. If there is a sudden and substantial loss in fluid levels, check for leaks. • Brake light illuminates alongside the ABS warning light indicates a failure of the electronic brake force distribution (EBFD). EBFD automatically varies braking force individually on each wheel increasing stopping ability. In this situation, vehicle brakes may become unpredictable. It's advised to stop and contact and authorised workshop. |
|
The Citroën Berlingo ABS warning light illuminates when a fault has occurred with the Anti-lock Braking System. Conventional brakes are not affected by an ABS failure, though there is an increased risk of locking wheel whilst under harsh / emergency braking. This fault is often due to a sensor failure or corroded cable / connection. Have system serviced as soon as possible. | |
The Citroën Berlingo engine coolant / overheating warning light illuminates steady when coolant is overheating. In this instance, safely pull off the road and switch off the engine. Allow several minutes before checking coolant levels. A flashing coolant light is an indication that coolant levels are too low. When engine has cooled, top up coolant levels. In case of emergencies, normal water can be used. |
The orange triangle containing an exclamation mark is a 'service' warning light an appears on the MK 2 version of the Citroën Berlingo only. The warning triangle indicates minor faults when temporarily lit, or major fault if the light stays on constantly. Check the fault log under diagnostics in the trip computer for an indication of the problem. If there are no warning logs stored, diagnostic equipment is required to read fault codes. Fault codes are not always stored in the trip computer, in this instance, there can be codes stored in the ECU that only an OBD tool will read. The service warning triangle may illuminate alone or with another warning light. Service warning light and other warnings + = Flashing tyre pressure warning and warning triangle indicates the tyre pressure monitoring system has a fault or no sensor has been detected in one of the wheels. + = Flashing UREA / warning triangle plus audible signal and message to indicate a limited range between 0 - 370 miles (0 - 600 km) before AdBlue tank is empty. Top up AdBlue to avoid breakdown. + = Flashing UREA / warning triangle plus audible signal and message to indicate that starting has been prevented. AdBlue tank is empty and the starting inhibition system required by regulations prevents the starting of the engine. To enable starting of the engine, at least 5 litres of AdBlue must be added to the tank. + + = UREA / warning triangle / engine self-diagnosis (check engine) plus audible signal. A temporary fault with the SCR emissions control system has been detected. Once the exhaust emissions return to normal the warning lights will go out. + + = Flashing UREA / warning triangle / engine self-diagnosis (check engine) plus audible signal and message indicating the remaining driving range. You can continue driving for up to 685 miles (1,100 km) until the engine inhibition system is triggered. Contact a Citroën workshop. + + = Flashing UREA / warning triangle / engine self-diagnosis (check engine) plus audible signal and message indicating the prevention of starting the engine. The authorised driving limit has been exceeded. A fault has been detected with the emissions control system. Contact a Citroën workshop. |
|
Applies to the Mk 2 version of the Citroën Berlingo, this EOBD (European On Board Diagnostics) emissions control system warning light, often referred to as the 'check engine' light indicates a fault with the system. This system monitors the emission limits of: • Carbon monoxide • Unburnt hydrocarbons • Nitrogen oxides • Particles This warning light flashing may indicate engine misfire which has the potential to cause catalytic converter damage. |
|
Applies to the Mk 3 version of the Citroën Berlingo, the engine self-diagnosis system warning light illuminates constantly or flashes: Constantly: The emissions control system has a fault. Have the vehicle scanned with diagnostic equipment to gain fault codes from an authorised workshop. Flashes: Risk of unburnt fuel entering the catalytic converter and destroying it. Have vehicle checked immediately. Self-diagnosis system and other warnings + = engine self-diagnosis system warning light / spanner fault light indicates a minor fault has been detected in the engine. You can continue driving - have fault checked as soon as possible. + + = AdBlue / service spanner / engine self-diagnosis (check engine) plus audible signal and message. A fault with the SCR emissions control system has been detected. Once the exhaust emissions return to normal the warning lights will go out. + + = Flashing AdBlue / service spanner / engine self-diagnosis (check engine) plus audible signal and message indicating the remaining driving range. You can continue driving for up to 685 miles (1,100 km) until the engine inhibition system is triggered. Contact a Citroën workshop. + + = Flashing AdBlue / service spanner / engine self-diagnosis (check engine) plus audible signal and message indicating the prevention of starting the engine. The authorised driving limit has been exceeded. A fault has been detected with the emissions control system. Contact a Citroën workshop. |
The Citroën Berlingo battery warning light comes on for the following reasons: Constant on: There is a fault with the battery charging circuit. This could be due to dirty or loose battery terminals, slack or cut alternator belt, faulty alternator etc. After these checks, it could be a fault with the ignition or injection system. Flashing: The flashing battery light indicates economy mode. When the engine has stopped, to save the battery from discharging, certain utilities such as windscreen wipers, audio equipment, electric windows etc can only be used for 30 minutes. Once the 30 minutes are over, the battery warning light will flash. You can resume function by starting the engine. |
|
The Citroën Berlingo airbag warning light remaining fixed on or flashing indicates a fault with the airbag or seat belt pretensioners system. + = For the Citroën Berlingo Mk 3, this indicates a fault with the airbags or pyrotechnic pretensioning system with post collision safety brake (APCB). |
|
The Citroën Berlingo service spanner warning light is a generic warning where the fault has no dedicated lamp. The service spanner illuminates temporarily indicating a minor fault. The fault should be identified in a massage in the instrument panel. If the service spanner light remains on, it indicates a major fault. The spanner / wrench warning light along with a message also illuminates indicating that the remote control / wireless entry key fob battery is flat. See Citroën Berlingo key battery replacement for a guide on how to replace the battery, battery types and key initialisation. + - Service spanner light / parking brake fault light = Parking brake fault - the vehicle can no longer be immobilised with the engine running. If the manual application and release of the parking brake lever is not working, the control lever is faulty. + - Service spanner light / DSC light = Parking brake fault - emergency braking does not have full power. If automatic release is unavailable, use manual release. + - Service spanner light / Auto release parking brake unavailable light = Parking brake fault - Automatic application of the parking brake is not available. The parking brake can only be used manually. + + - Service spanner light / parking brake fault light / Auto release parking brake unavailable light = Parking brake fault - Both automatic and manual function may not be working. When stationary, to immobilise your vehicle: pull and hold the control lever for 7 - 15 seconds until the warning light comes on. If this fails to work, make your vehicle safe by parking on a level surface and with a manual gearbox, leave it in gear. With an automatic gearbox, select P and put the supplied chocks against the wheels. + + + - Service spanner light / parking brake fault light / Auto release parking brake unavailable light / Electronic parking brake (red) = Parking brake fault - The parking brake is not operating at maximum efficiency and cannot ensure safe parking in all situations. Park on a level surface and with a manual gearbox, leave it in gear. With an automatic gearbox, select P and put the supplied chocks against the wheels. |

This is the Citroën Berlingo Electronic Stability Program (ESP / Mk 2 models) or Dynamic Stability Control (DSC / Mk 3 models). This incorporates Anti-slip Regulation (ASR) which is a form of traction control. Citroën Berlingo Mk 2: The warning light flashes indicating that ESP / ASR has been triggered to stabilise the vehicle. If the ESP warning light remains on (non-flashing), it indicates a fault with the system (wheel speed sensor). Check that the tyres are not under-inflated. Citroën Berlingo Mk 3: The warning light flashes indicating that DSC / ASR has been triggered to stabilise the vehicle. If the DSC warning light remains on (non-flashing), it indicates a fault with the system. + + - Service spanner light / DSC warning light / Auto release parking brake unavailable light = Hill start assist has a fault. |
The steering wheel and red exclamation mark is the Citroën Berlingo power steering failure warning light. It may become more difficult to turn the wheel particularly at slower speeds. You can continue to drive - have vehicle inspected as soon as possible. | |
The Citroën Berlingo Mk 3 AdBlue warning light illuminates for the following reasons: - Flashing with audible signal and message indicating the remaining range before the AdBlue tank is empty. Top up AdBlue as soon as possible. + - Flashing + Service spanner with audible signal and message indicating the remaining range before the AdBlue tank is empty (375 miles). Top up AdBlue immediately to avoid breakdown. + - Flashing + Service spanner with audible signal and message indicating engine start has been prevented. Top up AdBlue immediately with at least 5 litres of AdBlue. Note Not all versions of the Citroën Berlingo will illuminate with the service spanner. |

Solid orange triangle comes up regularly on the dash of my citroen berlingo .. any ideas please?
Hi Janet,
If there are no alert logs / fault messages to read in the trip computer and if there are no other warning lights to give you an indication on what the problem might be, you’ll need a diagnostic tool for accessing fault codes stored in the vehicle’s ECU. Pretty much all vehicle workshops carry these diagnostic tools and they can also be purchased online. Failing that, your Berlingo may just require a service.
Hi, Could you please tell me what the Red triangle with exclamation mark means
Hi Paul,
Is it the latest generation of Berlingo (2018 to present)? The red triangle containing an exclamation mark is a serious fault warning light. The triangle light should come on along with another warning light, warning message and audible alert. It’s associated with an engine fault, braking system fault, power steering, automatic transmission or electrical fault. It’s a generic warning light (albeit a serious one) so unless there’s another warning light or message that helps you to narrow down the problem, you’ll need diagnostics to scan for fault codes.
What could be wrong when the triangle with exclamation mark and check engine light comes on at the same time? And when this happens the car slows down and the accelerator stops working untill you stop, put off the ignition for about five minutes or less before it starts working normal again. It happens once in a while. The car is a Citroen berlingo diesel engine
Check engine + urea sign is on
I filled the urea and still nothing changes
Can u still use the car or uts recommended to go straight to the workshop??
I have a 2016 Berlingo van, sometimes I hear 3 quick beeps followed by another 3 or 4, it seems to be when I am approaching speed cameras. Is there a warning system in the van for this?
